Traveling with Your Disposable Vape? These Countries Could Get You Fined

As vaping gains popularity worldwide, travelers might assume it’s acceptable to carry their best disposable vape across borders. However, many countries have stringent regulations—or outright bans—on vaping products. Unwittingly bringing a vape into these nations can lead to hefty fines or even imprisonment. Here’s what you need to know before packing your vape for international travel.

Asia: Strict Enforcement and Severe Penalties

Thailand
Thailand has enforced a strict ban on e-cigarettes since 2014. Possessing or using a vape can result in fines up to 30,000 baht (approximately £700) or imprisonment for up to 10 years.

Vietnam
Starting in 2025, Vietnam will prohibit the production, sale, and consumption of e-cigarettes. Currently, tourists caught vaping face fines up to 2 million dong (around US$78.50), while those involved in the trade of e-cigarettes risk fines up to 3 billion dong or imprisonment for up to 15 years.

Singapore
Singapore maintains a zero-tolerance policy on vaping. Importing, selling, or possessing e-cigarettes is illegal, with penalties including fines up to S$10,000 (approximately US$7,400) and imprisonment for up to six months.

India
India banned e-cigarettes in 2019, making their production, sale, and import illegal. Violators can face significant fines and imprisonment.

Taiwan
In Taiwan, e-cigarettes are classified as regulated drugs. Bringing them into the country can lead to imprisonment.

Middle East: Zero Tolerance Policies

Qatar
During the 2022 World Cup, Qatar enforced strict anti-vaping laws. Individuals caught vaping faced fines up to 10,000 riyals (around £2,200) or imprisonment for up to three months.

Jordan and Iran
Both countries have comprehensive bans on vaping, with severe penalties for possession or use.

Oceania: Regulatory Overhauls

Australia
Australia has implemented stringent regulations on vaping. As of January 1, 2024, the importation of disposable vapes is banned. Further restrictions, including an import ban on all vapes and mandatory licenses for importers, took effect in March 2024. Violators can face fines up to AUD 322,600 (approximately US$210,000) and imprisonment for up to two years.

Europe: Emerging Restrictions

Belgium
In December 2024, Belgium became the first EU country to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, citing health and environmental concerns.

Spain
Spain has joined other countries in enforcing strict regulations on vaping. Violators can face fines up to €1,900 (approximately £1,600).

Ireland
Ireland has banned single-use e-cigarettes and is advocating for increased EU taxes on vaping products. Violators face substantial penalties.

Other Notable Countries with Vaping Bans

  • Maldives: As of December 15, 2024, the Maldives banned the import, sale, and use of vapes. Penalties include fines up to MVR 50,000 (approximately US$3,200).
  • Mexico: Mexico has prohibited vapes and vaping products since 2022. Smoking or vaping in public spaces is illegal.
  • Venezuela: In August 2023, Venezuela banned the production, sale, and consumption of e-cigarettes.

Tips for Traveling Vapers

  1. Research Destination Laws: Before traveling, check the vaping laws of your destination country.
  2. Avoid Carrying Vapes to Banned Countries: If your destination has strict anti-vaping laws, it’s best to leave your vape at home.
  3. Check Airline Policies: Airlines have varying rules regarding the number of vapes and batteries allowed on board. For instance, Emirates, Jet2, and Ryanair permit up to 20 batteries in carry-on luggage, while British Airways allows only 15.
  4. Store Vapes Properly: Vapes should be stored in hand luggage, as lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage.
  5. Do Not Vape on Planes: Vaping on a plane is strictly prohibited and can result in severe penalties.

Conclusion

While vaping may be commonplace in some countries, it’s crucial to be aware of international regulations when traveling. Ignorance of the law is not a defense, and the consequences can be severe. Always research and adhere to the vaping laws of your destination to ensure a safe and hassle-free journey.
